There are ( I presume ) systems in place for rewarding well peforming teachers - PRP or recognition schemes - so think it would be better to give feedback to the head teacher and send a note to the teacher concerned they did more than expected for your child, handled a situation particularly well etc.

Erm, there really are no such systems in place! (not saying this as a reason to buy presents at all, but just correcting a misconception)

there should be though! Some teachers go above and beyond their duty and others escape through the gates at 3.10....all for the same pay.....or in my case the teachers who leave early etc get paid a hell of a lot more than me who is there til 6 lol!

to be honest i feel pressurised into buying gifts for teachers at the end of the year

once it reaches the last week my kids start asking when they can go and buy the gift and panic if they don't have something to take in on the last day - and yes i have kept them off school on the last day as i couldn't afford to buy for all their teachers - 5 teachers between 3 kids . . . the joy of job share!

now i buy a gift card from oxfam - i'v done school meals n school books in the past - this year it was a health check for £6
also means that i only have to buy 1 for each child - the card is kept in the classroom. been told by a couple of the teachers that they preferred that cos there's only so much chocolate n smellies that they can hand ;-)

  • I'm a TA in a special needs school and sometimes I get gifts, last year I had a mug from 1 student and a little window sill flower in a pot.

They're 5 students in my class (3 members of staff), all with very high behavioural/autistic needs and what makes my day is when students make things for me.

One student made me a fan last week and another student gave me a drawing of a car with the australian flag on it (I'm an aussie).

I actually do keep the things they make for me, it means a lot.

I have to confess that ive I've spent a lot more then i I normally would on my daughter's teacher. Shes She's leaving this year and this teacher has been fantastic for the whole year. the extra confidence shes she's given my daughter this year has been second to none. Shes she's been fantastic to her, has really encouraged her to be ready for the grammar.
So ive I've brought bought a card and written a note from me for all her thanks, daughter will right write something and ive I've brought bought her a lovely pair of flower earrings so she can remember my daughter in years to come.

DD has made her teacher a handmade card and I have bought a box of celebrations to send in for her teacher and the assistants to share x As dd is missing the last 2.5 days of term I suppose there will be time for the chocs to be shared in the staff room.

Nobody had any trouble understand that post. It's a shame that you felt the need to rip it to bits, especially when she said that her daughter had been given confidence. Confidence to have a go and do your best is better than not trying to communicate through fear of not being perfect.

That's fair enough, but I wouldn't see it as my place to tip a teacher because they wouldn't get a reward otherwise - realise that is not what you are saying. Just think it's another odd thing from across the pond. If the child wants to do something, that is entirely different.
