Barclaycard Interest Refund

I called up barclaycard last night to cancel my card and they offered me a £50 refund to keep the card with them - i didn't fully understand why they offered it (language barrier) but from what I could gather it was due to the fact that i'd paid interest on my card for purchases (while I also had a promotional balance on it from a BT).

Is this common practice? Can't say its something i've ever heard off before.

They are sending out a letter to confirm why they have offered this.

Customer retention used to be common practice, now a days its rarer - with Santander I didnt even have to speak to a human being to cancel it but did it all via the IVR
