Double Glazing

Hi

We are in desparate need of new windows, ours are double glazed but old and our house is constantly freezing! We will need new patio doors, a new front door (as this needs replacing too) and 9 windows one of which is apparently going to be expensive as its a bay window.

We've only had one quote which was last year, I think the price varied from about 5 grand to half that depending on what window we had (one opening only is alot cheaper it seems) and it was also cheaper if we took on their finance.

I'm in northamptonshire so if you know of any reputable companies and/or can give me some advice on how to go about doing this on the cheap advice is very welcome! we don't intend to stay in this house for a long time (another 2yrs at the most) so don't want to spend a fortune cause we haven't got a fortune!

thanks!
suzanne

I would seriously consider other insulation and measures before you spend money on new double glazing then. Loft insulation up to 230mm? Draft proofing? Can you give an outline description of the construction of your house? (e.g. slate roof, brick wall, semi, whatever)

if you're only staying there for two years then its simply not worth the cost of doing the double glazing.

you say its already double glazed but old... why exactly is it freezing , where are the draughts coming from ..you may be able to tackle the problems cheaply but effectively.

lastly, using their finance will probably be very very expensive..just don't go down that line.

If you have double glazing and you are cold I can not see how new double glazing will make you any warmer.

As other posters have stated. Check your insulation and draught proofing.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • its the old double glazing with wood frames you can hear every noise from the outside through them and the curtains move because of the draft!

we do lose quite alot of heat due to our stairs being in our lounge as well. house is a slate roof, brick walls and is a semi detached.

And when i say another 2 years in the house, who knows we could be here for alot longer.
