Voluntary work

Can anyone advise of a good way for someone with mental health problems to get some voluntary work as part of their recovery or to learn new skills? Or even know how to look for organisations that can help with this?
I'm asking for someone who is recovering from severe depression, anxiety disorder and who is at age of 30 only now coming to turns with what happened to him as a child.
He's looking for something that is constructive, maybe artistic, but certainly unpressured - things like chuggers or shop work would be unsuitable for the time being, but something like horticultural work, support work for others in a group or assistance to others would be suitable.
I've tried looking on the internet and can't find anything unless looking for specific organisations (I thought there would be something like "total jobs" but for voluntary work).
Thanks for any suggestions and help

Try phoning the local council, they will have a volunteer centre and have a full range of vacancies, as well as maybe offering courses - mine offers wellbeing, soft skills (total help when MH issues) and confidence. Failing that, speak to your local Mind, most of them have volunteer projects and can also help your friend with their mental health issues.0
