so i have a scenic 1.9dci 2002. when it runs it runs fine high mpg smooth. how ever in this recent warm weather it has randomly stalled about 5 times in last month and also after stalling failed to start twice resulting in breakdown call out and and a spray of easy start to get her going agian were she runs fine. never happend when cold though
so any ideas?
i know that the tdc and cam sensors can cause starting issues but can they casue it to randomly stall andwhy does it only happen on hot days.

Dont let them use easy start. Its nasty stuff and burns too rapidly for a diesel engine.
Had it plugged into a code reader? Any fault codes?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Easy start is ok sometimes as an emergency get you going solution.
But the car fundamentally needs some attention. Take it to a professional. I'm surprised the breakdown service didn't recommend this the first time it broke down, and equally surprised they attended the second time for the same fault. (unless you are paying for each call out, in which case the MSE thing to do is get it repaired properly)0 -
second time i had my own can of easy starty as i was 250 miles from home and got a can just incase. its booked in for mot next week so will get checked then0

1.9 dci sufferes from injector failures.
also sufferes from caked up in carbon throttle body causing stalls and starting issues.
also EGR valve can cause similar problems and a common factor on all diesels to pack up at somepoint requiring a clean out.
also suffers water temp sensor failures causing failing to start, stalls etc, after a stall radiator fan will kick on thats a sign the water temp sensor has a problem.
try not to use easy start if at all possible.0 -
its not the egr valve i have had that before and not geting any problems like i had with that and the fan isnt going after stalling either.
as for te easy start i knows its bad and ive only had to use the can once with a 1 sec spray apart from that after stalling its started again no problems.
just strange it only happend when engine is warm and its warmoutr side also like the warm air is making a difference.0 -
EGR valve can stick open which causes an incorrect mixture when starting.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

but would a sticking open egr valve make the car stall ? would it make car run perfectly after being started with easy start if it was still stuck open and also the coil light comes on when there are egr valve issues on the scenic as ive had it.0

The EGR could cause mixture issues over or under fuelling. So cold and hot starting are quite likely. Stalling. Less so but could be several issues all at once.
What about the fault codes? Have you read them yet?
Leaving it could be pushing the repair costs up. On my club forum someone mentioned a strange noise 2 months ago.
They posted yesterday asking if anyone had an engine going cheap,
Seems the chain went and the engine destroyed itself.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
well turns out the fault was a knackerd injector seal on number 4 cylinder. all fixed now and running better then ever0

It is a diesel. Doesn't work like that. Unlike a petrol engine, airflow into the engine is constant as there's not a butterfly (either on carb or throttle body) to restrict airflow. The engine constantly draws in what is needed with each induction stroke regardless of any leaks in the intake path prior to the cylinder.
The only time airflow is an issue in a diesel is if there is insufficient air being supplied which would not be a problem with a stuck EGR valve.0
