Do I need to tell BT I'm moving to Virgin?

Strange question this, but I'm confused. I currently have BT phone line, BT Vision and Bt Infinity. I get these all free through my current employer, but I am changing jobs at the end of the month so want to go to Virgin Media. I have already ordered their current fibre BB, tv and phone package, and have requested to port my BT number to them.

I realise I have to give 30 days notice to BT, so called them up and requested to cancel. They said I didn't need to tell them and VM will cancel the contract with them and port everything across. Im not too sure! Surely that only applies when you are changing from a like for like service with a MAC code. i.e copper bb to copper bb, not copper to fibre.

Any advice would be great! I dont want to end up paying for BT and VM at the same time which I can see happening at this rate!

Cancel in writing sending the letter recorded delivery but set the cancellation date for a couple days to a week after your install by VM.When your VM goes live you may have a temporary number until your old BT number ports over.Another reason to do this is in case the VM installers encounter problems which may delay the install if your home has not had VM before..And VM is only fibre to the Mux,which can be upto 1/2 mile from your home,it's copper from the Mux to the cabinets & home.

    Thanks I will do that.

I just called BT again and got a much more helpful girl who said VM will take over the line and do the change and pay any termination fees, but I can call back in a day or two to check its going through. It's good when you get someone who knows what they are talking about!

Actually,it sounds like she doesn't know what she's talking about. If you are going to a cable service, and going by your first post you are,VM wont take over the BT line as cable does not connect into the BT exchange, they're totally seperate.
The VM engineers will come out & run a new drop cable from the nearest cable DP (Distribution Point) cabinet to your home, they'll then bring the cable into your home & fit a new phone point next to the BT one & a couple other boxes for the TV/BBand (VM broadband runs off the CoAx feed & not the phone line)

You see that is what I thought and was why I was confused. The girl explained that they would take over the bb and phone as if I was using their LLU broaband and then they would disconnect it with openreach.

I will still write to BT and check with them with a phone call.

Er - you are not going from copper to fibre, but from (copper) twisted pair, to co-ax. BT has fibre, Virgin has fibre. True, it is closer to you than BT, but YOU don't get a fibre connection.
