claiming ppi without paperwork?

Hi, ive just tried claiming back PPI from yorkshire bank, they gave me account numbers going back to 1999 but told me they couldnt do anything with accounts before 2005 due to needing the agreement paperwork which they dont keep for that long, so nder them terms are looking at just 3 loans going back tll 2005 and not the other 5 going back further, does this sound about right or is there a way that i can still go for the older acocounts, tey said theyd probably be able t tell if id paid PPI but not how it was sold to me without the agreement. also on the statement they gave me with the account numbers and dates, some had the letter A after them and one had AP, does anyone know what these stand for?, any help is much appreciated thanks!

Firms will start destroying data after a period when it is no longer required. This is typically 6 years.

Whilst they can consider complaints on earlier dates, if they no longer have the data and you do not either then you hit a brick wall and its game over.
