Building Regs for out house

They just check the calcs. It's a lot quicker and easier than doing them from scratch.0

Makes you wonder if it's worth googling how to do the calculations and doing it yourself.
I guess it depends on how much you trust building regs to check them accurately. It's a pretty big deal if you get it wrong!0 -

well it's the structual engineer that you'd trust. No way I'd want to play being a structual engineer and guessing!0 -
To be honest any builder worth his salt will fit an rsj, and KNOW that it is capable of doing the job and complying, if he doesn't? new builder reqd,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Most of this stuff can be done retrospectively, get it right and no issues, it's the essence of this topic to be honest.
But this is irrelevant.
Plans can be submitted by anyone and without qualifications, if they specify a beam that BC agree to, that will take the load, then heyhoI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

The calculations for a basic UB/UC installation really arent difficult, however you need to know what the loads are that you are imposing. When you employ the services of a structural engineer they have liability cover should their design fail. Im a qualified Civil Engineer and can do the calculations however as its not something I do on a day to day basis. I would still get it checked by somebody who does for anything other than basic installations. A builder can use rule of thumb design but you would still end up needing to prove the beam. For example they may have a standard set of calcs for a 215x215UC which they use everytime they do a basic whole through a double skin external wall however this could be overkill for what you need.
It's always wise to ask someone in the know!
HTHSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0
