  • I am with Owain re the HA. Suggest you read your tenancy agreement carefully - looking for something like their duties to you as a tenant if your home is uninhabitable.

Yup - agree with both the above.

If they are advising that you need to move out - they should be sourcing alternative accommodation for you. Not sure how this works for any pets in the house but worth asking Shelter etc if you can at least claim some of the costs.

No, they are doing renovations on lots of their houses in our area so its not just us who are affected. A lot of my neighbours are in the same situation but I think the difference between us and a lot of them is that they have family/friends nearby who they can stay/spend time with whilst the work is being done whilst we have nobody. My nearest relatives are over 70 miles away from where we live . I think its fair to say that we don't live in a particularly nice area and that there are fairly high levels of social deprivation around us. I'm lucky because I've got a job and have managed to get my children into decent schools but I know a lot of people nearby who whether through their own choice or not are not as fortunate. There are high levels of unemployment and crime around here and a lot of extended families. Its difficult we have to live here because even though I work we can't afford anything else but its not through choice and the renovations need to be done!!!

  • Loobylou - please check your lease & take legal advice.

They should have a legal obligation to re-house you if they need to carry out works on the house

  • And ensure that you remove anything of any value (financial and sentimental) as you go and the workmen arrive. That one's from bitter experience

They aren't allowed to dump you on the street/leave you with the alternative of no floor, power, water, etc for over two months.

It'll be worth it in the end - but they do have to give you somewhere else to go.

Do you HAVE to move out?

I have just been through all this myself, total rewire, new windows, new bathroom, new kitchen, new central heating etc

we only had a few days where we wern't allowed in the house at all, so we set up a tent in the back garden

the dog absolutely loved all the comings and goings and was fab socialisation for her

as for our wimpy scared of everything cat, we set up a cat litter tray along with food and water in a bedroom and just moved her around as and when neccessary,

I think the animals got through all the mess, noise and general carnage better than I did
A heap big thank you to everyone who posts the comps, your all stars!

We don't HAVE to move out but they have said it will be better if we do because of what they will be doing, floorboards are going to be coming up etc. I know I can get away with the children for a while because the work is being done in the school holidays and I only work when they are at school and I'm happy to do that for a week or so because I could use a break for a few days anyway but, I'm worrying about the pusses and how they will cope which is why I think it might be better to try and find them alternative accomodation for a while. I just want to do the right thing for them really because as I said earlier they are much loved members of our family.

I would have thought any extra expenses that occurs to the HA could be claimed by them on their insurance and this could possibly include cattery fees. You really need to check your legal position in this and not accept as Gospel what they are saying.
A landlord acquaintance of mine had to put his tenant up in an hotel as there was no bathroom floor ( due to damage by the tenant) and he claimed the cost back from his insurers

If you really do have to move out, consider a small ad asking for a temp foster home - you would have to vet them very carefully and get references.

I check Gumtree for people needing temp foster homes for vacinated animals, as it is a good way to supplement an income. My sister did some temp fostering and didn't want any payment just the cat's food to be provided; you may be lucky and find some kind person out there, perhaps someone who has lost their own cat and isn't ready to commit to another permanently yet

I hope it all works out well for you all
