I have received a personal cheque through the post today for something I am selling. The person writing the cheque has written my name then in brackets put my 'company' name.

Can I still cash the cheque, as I want to see it clear before I release the goods?

If you're paying it into the company account (assuming you're a director and named on the account), yes. If you're paying it into a personal account, no.

In practice cheques aren't very closely checked, if you had a batch of them to pay in you'd probably get away with it with minimum fuss. If its just the one then the teller is more likely to check and may query it.

Up to you to decide if its going to be quicker to get the buyer to reissue or to take it to the bank and see what they do

Thanks to mrjam and InsideInsurance. I have presented the cheque to the bank and saw the chief cashier. She said the bank couldn't accept it.
