Cant see internet over WEP connection, can over LAN cable

A friend has asked me to help with his D Link TM wireless router (model DSL 2640B) and it's wifi connection to the internet.

He can see the internet when using a LAN cable into the device.

He has WEP wifi access setup to the router with a 13 digit password. Computers can see a good WIFI signal to the router, but cannot connect to the internet through it ("Limited or no connectivity: The connection has limited or no connectivity. You might be unable to access the Internet or some network resources".). I have tried it with both Open and Shared Key autentication, to no avail.

I have restarted the router

Windows Network Diagnotics Test just told me that I couldnt connect to DHCP Server; DNS Server and couldn't ping IP 192.168.1.2, which I kinda guessed.

PC is XP SP3

I can't see anything obviously wrong with the config on the router.

What do I try next?

Network and Sharing Center. Is the wireless connection showing as Public or Private?

What IP address is the Wifi adapter getting?





As an aside, WEP security is extremely easy to beat.

"Limited or no connectivity" usually means that you have keyed in the password wrong.

When using WiFi, I always use the "Access list" functionality.

This means that only certain devices with MAC addresses that I have specifically added to the list, can connect via WiFi.

This feature "could" be turned on by the router and if so, it will allow you to connect but will not provide an IP Address.
