Planning holiday to Savannah and Charleston USA - thoughts/ tips please?

I loved both Charleston and Savannah. Do be aware that they are interesting in the same sort of way and offer similar experiences, so standard advice is to see one or the other rather than both.
If at all possible, see if you can arrange B and B with an American host. I did this in Charleston, and met some very pleasant and interesting people.0 -
Thanks for all the advice - I have made note of everything!
We plan to use airmiles so will almost certainly go through Atlanta as the miles are wth Delta - Detroit is an option and then change to fly on to the local airport. We have used Atlanta before and I know where all the comments are coming from!!
If anyone has anything to add, I will be really happy to hear it - thanks to of you so far though...........0 -
Kayak is showing air fares of around £600 for next Easter.0

We flew to Sanford last year and did St Augustine (LOVE St Augustine) http://www.augustine.com/, Charleston (we were meant to do Savannah as well, but never got there) then Hilton Head and back to Orlando For Harry Potter at Universal. Fantastic trip, but you ask about Charleston, so here goes:
We stayed at the Best Western King Charles Inn http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/US/SC/Charleston-hotels/BEST-WESTERN-King-Charles-Inn/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=41026.
Great location for walking the city and one of the few to have free parking. Comfortable, clean, very pleasant- if generic -rooms and good price comparatively for the area. It's
very close to the City market http://thecharlestoncitymarket.com/.
We took a Carriage ride (very informative), walked the Battery (Forrest Gump bandstand)
http://www.dreamcharleston.com/charleston-battery.html and Rainbow Row http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhqDiHeI3Mg and visited a couple of historic houses http://www.charlestonsfinest.com/sc/housemuseums.htm
Food was generally good, if expensive. We had a fantastic value Early Bird meal at Pearlz Oyster Bar http://www.pearlzoysterbar.com/, there is a huge Bubba Gump restaurant and several cafes in the City Market area which serve a good value breakfast. Had the worst meal of our entire trip at the Tabbuli Grill, which unsurprisingly has tumbled down the ratings on Trip Advisor recently.
All of that was in walking distance of our hotel.
We also took a boat trip to Patriot's Point http://www.patriotspoint.org/
and a bit further afield drove to Boon Hall Plantation http://www.boonehallplantation.com/
If I can help with any other info, just ask.
ETA Not sure if it was just the time of year, May, but there was the constant beautiful scent of Confederate Jasmine which was in bloom everywhere.0 -
Detroit is an option and then change to fly on to the local airport
