Help with car insurance for a young driver!

Hello guys,
I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on where to get the cheapest car insurance for young drivers. I am 18 and I am currently looking at having a black box in the car so the insurance is brought down. Are there any companies which do this for a decent price?
thanks

Diamond Insurance are competitive for many young drivers, but I don't think it is a black box arrangement.
Remember that the black box arrangement will monitor your driving and may restrict driving periods for which standard rates apply. If you drive after say 11pm, they will apply a higher rate. I think that is the way is works.The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
Read all the exclusions very very closely. Do you have to buy topup miles?
Can you drive at night? The box can cause lots of problems you dont think about whilst looking at the price alone.
As someone on here found out when they couold only buy topup miles in small chunks which worked out very very costly.
Having to turn down job offers because the extra miles or due to the hours.
Ive seen one policy where you cannot drive at night, If you do they charged something like £150 extra. What if you needed to goto the hospital or medical centre late one night? £150?
So many pitfalls. Dont just look at the price.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

.
It makes a big difference having several mature adults on the policy as named drivers. My daughter (just 19) has taken out a policy with Diamond.
£560, without NCD. As a named driver on my wife's policy it would have cost £730.

Yeah thanks Clifford_Pope i added my father as another driver and it brought the car insurances down dramatically. Also are you saying that your daughter only pays 560 a year for car insurance?0

Before you get too excited at the low quote, remember that insurance is based on:-
Vehicle type;
Postcode;
Age of driver;
Gender (for the moment);
Time license held;
Occupation;
Claims experience;
Etc.
We managed to get extremely low quote for our DD because we insured via a company where all of our other insurances are placed, so we got a portfolio discount and starter no claims bonus.
Everybody's circumstances are individual!
Clifford - is your daughter a learner by any chance? If so have Diamond confirmed that there will be no increase when she passes her test?0 -
My 17 year old son passed his test this week & insured his 1.0 corsa with Admiral.
He rang Admiral directly - he included myself & my husband which did bring the premium down (both have clean driving record).
The policy is for 10 months - after which he would be entitled to 1 year NCB - I don't know how that works.
The premium was still just over £2000 though - it was very expensive to pay this monthly rather than the lump sum that he decided to pay.
This isn't a black box arrangement - there are quite a few restrictions with black boxes.

Just to add to this - don't know if it's helpful.
I have just added my 17 year old daughter (provisional license) and my 19 year old daughter (full license but not driven for the last 18 months since passing her test) to my insurance as additional drivers.
I have my policy with Aviva and had to pay an additional £236 to add both girls. I bit the hand off the advisor and paid right away. This was several hundreds of pounds less than I was quoted with others.
Perhaps worth a call?0 -
Have you bought the car yet? Buying a car which is not common for young males will drop the price considerably, sometimes even if it is a higher insurance group.
I found any companies offering a blackbox were offering me thousands so its worth checking all the companies as having a blackbox may not help if the company will be expensive to start with.
If you can add older females to your policy do that as opposed to males. Tried adding both my parents to mine but removing my dad and having another experienced female reduced the quote even further. Also having 2 on there as opposed to 1 made it cheaper.
Try fiddling with every setting when getting quotes, the price can change in strange ways. If I were to park on the street here for example it would be cheaper than parking in the driveway.
Cheap quotes are possible, i've only just got a quote from admiral for under £700. (19, 1998 renault scenic megane 1.6, even with an at fault accident not even 2 years ago). Next closest was 1st central at over double the price
