A safe place for the deeds

  • There are no such thing as deeds any longer. The Land Registry dematerialised all deeds a couple of years ago so anything now registered at the Land Registry is computerised.

    If you have not moved for a while you should retain the deeds in a safe place becuase they will not have been dematerialised.

    Things are not like the old days any more unfortunately

    Sorry to tag on to someone elses question. But reading this thread got me thinking.

    Two years ago we re mortgaged our home and swapped lenders. In the process the deeds to the house were sent to us. Is this the norm or should our new lender have them. We are hoping to move house soon - does who holds the deeds have any impact on the selling process?
  • In answer to Trevor's question this is now normal. If you are moving soon you will find that any deeds, searches and any other documents will in fact be sent to yourself and not the Lender. Ant documents now in your possession will need to be handed to your Solicitor/Licensed Conveyancer - they may be of assistance to them in connection with any sale.

    As I said in an earlier post on this thread and Elliott has reconfirmed, this is part of the Land registration Act 2002.
    The Land Registry now stores the title deeds electronically.
