Honeymoon booked - Hotel Renovations

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone would perhaps be able to give me any advice.

We booked our honeymoon to the Maldives back in March 2012 with the travel agent Travel Bag. We paid for the insurance and deposit at this time.

In May we paid off the remainder of our balance and were looking forward to going away.

Now in July 6 weeks before we are due to travel, Travel Bag have emailed us to tell us of some renovations and building which is now taking place when were are there. But I would assume anything of this nature would have been scheduled for months before and the likely hood is that Travel Bag would have been aware of it.

They are currently not responding to my emails and was wondering if anyone could tell us our rights or at least what we may be able to do.

Many thanks,

Mark

Have you looked at some recent reviews on Tripadvisor? What work is being done? Have you tried calling Travelbag?

Don't assume that Travelbag will have been aware for months, especially in a place like the Maldives, where the non chain resorts are very relaxed and tend to do things last minute!

@mynameistallulah many thanks for the reply. I never considered Trip Advisor, I have checked some of the reviews and most are positive. Nothing recently covers the renovation though some people say the quality of rooms are poor.

I have since contacted Travel Bag via phone and they were little help, this was on Tuesday. They said they would have more answers for me by Thursday to which they have not.

My wife and I are going down on Saturday in person to resolve the matter. I have the feeling I would like my money back as this news and the Travel Bag lack of urgency and no replies has taken the shine off this destination for my honeymoon.

    Again thanks for the reply.

A bit of scaffolding and a chainsaw - Wouldn't even worry about it.

The Maldives is just down the road from India and so all the locals will be up and cleaning their metal dishes at 4am anyway. From the hours of 9pm until 6am horns are compulsory and dogs bark 24 hours per day.

Relax - It's the Asian way of life :D
  • @MrWang gonna be a bit of a shock for me then, I thought it would be peaceful :-)

@nellyII we booked flights through them when we went to Australia about 18months ago and my folks have used them several times to go to Thailand. We have always had good experiences and I can recommend Roo at the Knutsford branch she is well on the button. Unfortunately we couldn't get her this time as she was on maternity, but has since returned.
  • I've used travelbag in the past with no issue.

    I wouldn't worry too much.

What sort of resort are you going to in the Maldives? the resort I went to had lots and lots of buildings over the entire island. So it may mean than any renovations are no where near where you are staying in the resort - they may be housing guests away from them.

Maybe message some people on tripadvisor who have recently gone and ask if they noticed the renovations? Or email the hotel direct with some questions.

Reminds me of a hut I stayed in in Thailand complete with stray dogs underneath, that Id like to forget about :rotfl:The only reason I managed to fall asleep with the noise was because we were woken up at the crack of dawn because of the intense heat and had to get out the room asap.

Another noisy place was Malaysia - made the mistake of staying right next to the place where they did their religious call to prayer every few hours on the loud speaker..

OP - Its entirely possible Travelbag did not know. Dont go in all guns firing on this assumption. Theyve at least made you aware which is more than a lot of companies would do.
