found cheque dated 2007

When going through an elderly relative's papers we have come across a seemingly unpaid cheque for £250 from 2007. We believe it to be in relation to Lloyds TSB shares that were owned by said relative. Does anybody know how we can check this as our relative hasn't a clue about it but is quite happy for us to find out?

Start by googling the name of the company, account no and sort code - it might throw up a clue.

But it might be that you find out that the cheque was reported misssing and a replacement has already been issued, so don't get too excited yet.

how about present it as you would usually and see what happens? Do you need to know where it came from? Presumably if it cannot be cashed then you will find out why and be able to chase it up?

I was going to point out cheques must be presented within 6 months, but having checked first, apparently that's not strictly true! :o

This is what UK Payments Administration says in its FAQs:

Is it true that cheques are only valid for six months?
It is common banking practice to reject cheques that are over six months old to protect the payer, on the basis that payment may already have been made by some other means or the cheque may have been lost or stolen. However, this is at the discretion of individual banks. It should not be assumed that cheques in excess of six months old would automatically be rejected — the only certain way to cancel a cheque is to request that a stop be placed on it (although cheques backed by a Cheque Guarantee Card cannot be stopped). It is recommended that, if possible, customers in possession of cheques that are over six months old obtain a replacement. A cheque remains legally valid for six years.

As tyllwyd has said, the original cheque may well have had a stop placed on it, with a replacement issued which was subsequently presented.
