I once broke my Scaphoid just a few days before taking-off on an European holiday. Apart from it being a bit sore for the first few days, there was no way I was not going to let it stop me doing anything and really, it didn't. :)

Indeed. This board is littered with stories of people who failed to do so.

Remember to declare your son's injury to insurers; there is a possibility that you may have to pay a small increase against a normal premium to have it covered or that it may be excluded from being insured against any further complications.

I wish your son well and hope that you manage to enjoy a lovely family holiday. :)

Thank you. I am about to book holiday insurance now!!! There seems an ok company who cover travelling with a broken limb - cost has trebled but at least we'll be covered. Lesson learnt.

My daughter broke the same bone at the begining of December, along with two other bones. From what the consultant said, the scaphoid can take a long time to heal. This is because it has a poor blood supply. Treatment depends on the location of the break. My daughter was lucky and avoided the operation. Her's was plastered. Standard time for a brokedn arm is apparently two weeks. Beacuse she had also broken the scaphoid, she was given four weeks in plaster. Hers did heal in that time.
We also had a holiday booked; daughter is also a regular swimmer. I did find a waterproof cast cover. Out of necessity these need to be a really tight fit. It was comfortable enough to shower with etc, but daughter found it painfull to keep it on for longer periods. Fortunately her cast came off the day before we flew.

Thanks for that- hope it's healed now. Can you recommend any waterproof covers? We've just returned from the fracture clinic. In plaster now and return in two weeks for a further x ray - All depends on how it's healing whether we have further plaster or if really lucky - a splint

you MUST contact airline and ask for their advice.

They may say you need a split cast depending on length of flight and may insist on a letter stating fitness to fly. They are well within their rights to do so.

My daughter did this some years ago and we had to have her cast split and take xrays with us with a covering letter and have wrist recast at an english speaking hospital (we were away for 3 weeks) it then had to be split AGAIN to fly home.

ps: Even with a splint get doctors to write you a fit to fly letter (better safe than sorry)
