There's a lot in this forum about this already, with some great tips, so worth a search.

We've done Berlin, Cologne, Bonn, Dussledorf + Munich. Munich is the most "Christmassy" + is just like a living Christmas card, watching oompah bands playing carols in the snow outside the town hall on Marienplatz whilst drinking hot gluwein is just perfect. Head out to the massive Tollwood festival at night for extra fun. Berlin has the most markets to chose from + no shortage of sights + tours to fill your time. The other 3 are all fun in their own way, but I would say Berlin or Munich as 1st choice. Only been to Prague in the summer + it was full of English lads on stag weekends + pick-pockets, can't imagine it would be a Christmas treat. Non-German markets also tend to sell more plastic tat as they are not regulated like the German ones. Also, if you've never been to Germany, don't believe what people say about Germans, they are lovely people who are always polite + helpful.

I've been to the one in Aachen, Bethune and Brugge. The one is Aachen was the best, but I did enjoy the ones in Bethune and Brugge. :)

You are near Manchester and Liverpool airports which offer a good number of winter flights. It is worth getting to know which destinations are possible by looking at the airports and airlines' websites. If you book early for a trip in late November/Early December you'll get a cheaper trip.

Just to put my limited experience in the mix: I loved staying in Prague near Xmas & going to the market.
