Can we claim for damaged furniture?

Hi!

I'm just wondering if there's anyone who can help us with any info :)

We are renting the house we currently live in and have been here for almost 3 1/2 years, have always been good tenants, looked after the property and always paid the rent on time.

We recently had quite a large leak on our en-suite shower, which went through the wall and into our Daughters bedroom. We didn't notice for a few days as there were two bookcases against the wall. As soon as we noticed we contacted the Landlady who sent a plumber and this has now been temporarily resolved. However, the two bookcases have soaked up water and the wood has split. They are painted bookcases that have flowers printed on them and we would not be able to sand them down and repaint them :(

We have four children and are quite young parents, we've saved for a long time to start buying pieces of furniture that we love and to make it a home so are a bit gutted!

Anyway, I'm rambling, sorry! What I'd like to know (if there are any people in the know) is can we claim off our Landlady's rental insurance that she has on the property? We have our own contents insurance, but obviously this would cost us our excess and would bump up our monthly payments by a bit.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance :)

You will have to claim from your own contents insurance. Which is why you take it out
Your landlady will have buildings insurance only.

Are they worth claiming for though, consider your excess and your (maybe) extra premiums.

Could you possibly DIY them by sawing the bottoms off and just leaving them one shelf short or just buying a couple of cheapies from Argos or something. Where theres a will there's a way.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
