Varnish/treatment for outdoor bench

Picked up a nice piece of rough wood (possibly ash or yew) to make an outdoor bench. It's going to take ages to sand down and make the bench, so I'd like to find the best treatment to protect it for the rest of its life. - Danish oil, yacht varnish, linseed - the list seems to be endless.

Tung oil is great stuff - although any finish will require re-application periodically.0
