i have arranged an appointment for a talktalk engineer to come and fix my phone line today and there appointment was between 12 and 3. last night i recieved a phone call from the engineer stating he would be here between 2 and 2:30. now no one has turned up and i have had to arrange a taxi to pick me kids up from school because i have been stuck waiting in for them to arrive.

any ideas what i can do as i dont have the phone to ring them (hence the engineer appointment)?

    now used up over 100 minutes on my mobile trying to sort this out and still no further forward.

    anyone got any advise?

    It's not a TT engineer, it is an BT Openreach engineer, assuming a line fault. All you can do is report a missed appointment to TT.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
