Struggling to vacuum the stair carpet

As per the title, I am struggling to vacuum the carpet on my stairs. I have a fairly new vacuum cleaner, which I researched well before purchasing, but I find it very heavy and cumbersome. Whilst using it for the stairs one day, it fell down on top if me - which hurt!! Needless to say, I am now reluctant to use it on the stairs.
Any ideas?

I bought a secondhand Dyson which happily stands at the bottom of the stairs and the tube reaches the top. I had the same problem before and managed to fall down and the vac land on top of me  I keep an old vac at the top of the stairs to do the bedrooms and the 'Dolly' dyson downstairs - much better than carrying the flipping things up and down!Clearing the junk to travel light

Hi,
It is difficult to suggest anything without being able to see it, can you provide the make and model, or post a picture?
Mine is an upright vac and it sits at the bottom of the stairs and the hose detaches from the main body of the hoover and just about reaches to the very top, though sometimes I do the top couple of steps from above instead.

If you can afford it, see this thread:

I bought one and for £19.99 it's well worth it - even if you only used it for the stairs!0 -
I wear a pair of rubber gloves that are wet, wipe over the stair tred and the gloves collect the dust, dog hairs better than my vacuum did. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Due to health problems with my back neck and hands I find it very difficult to hoover my stairs.
Instead I use a dustpan and brush. I find the brush gets most of dust and debris out of carpets0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

I brush then down and hoover up at the bottom. Don't use a dustpan brush tho, a firm sweeping brush, gets most of the dirt off them.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

If you put the vacuum at the top of the stairs and pull down on it, then yeah, it will fall on you...
Leave it at the bottom and pull the hose up, not the other way round! What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
I dont vacuum the stairs - I find an oldfashioned scrubbing brush does a much better job anyway - just work downwards and then vacuum when it all lands at the bottom of the stairs!
(I too have been hit by falling vacuum cleaner in the past - and find this much the safer method too).0
