Hello, Ive just had my house rewired. Ive been told the quote will be cheaper if i pay cash rather than cheque by about £250. Is this a safe option? I will be getting certificates etc.. i think the electritian is not VAT registered. I dont have much info on this.. but was thinking cheque was safer? advice is appreciated

If you pay cash he can avoid paying tax.0

is it not a safe option to me?0

What do you mean by safer? Even if you pay by cheque he could disappear the day after he completes the job anyway. So long as you don't pay fully until you have the certificates then I don't see the risk.
An electrician would not have to be VAT registered unless he receives over about £70k per year so it wouldn't be surprising for a one man band not to be. His tax affairs and what he does with the cash are his problem not yours.0 -
Thanks Jaynne thats great, was making sure i wasnt missing something. I was told i would get certificates from him and also recieve some from the council a few weeks later0

Just don't pay fully until you have them and make that clear to him before he starts the work.0

There is no difference to you.
Cash, cheque, direct transfer whatever, he has still done the work, is still liable for it, you get the certificates and the work is recorded at the council just the same0 -
