NewReg negotiable discounts available?

So I have decided to (maybe) buy a private plate that I've always liked. Not really into 99% of the private plates I see around, but this one is pretty good. It's owned by NewReg themselves and they want £2k for it  + DVLA fees/VAT etc. About 18 months ago I emailed Newreg asking if they'd sell it to me for £1000, they agreed - but this didn't include VAT/DVLA fees so I declined. Does anyone have any anecdotes about good discounts that they have offered in the past? This particularly plate has been sitting there unsold for yonks. Don't want to be paying more than £1000 for it, all-in ideally, bit of a waste of money otherwise. Unfortunately as far as I can tell, they aren't really losing any money the longer they retain it, so there isn't much desire to sell it cheaply. :(

If you are absolutely certain that the registration you are interested in does indeed belong to Newreg, then you are at their mercy. The only real incentive for them to move it on, is to save on the annual £25 renewal fee payable to DVLA. Dealers are always aware that the next phonecall could be from someone else who is prepared to pay the full asking price.

As far as anecdotes go, I can tell you that just under a year ago we were moving house and needed £10,000 quickly to complete the purchase. I buy and sell private number plates for a living and at that stage I was selling stock at cost in an attempt to raise money fast. That meant some lucky buyers securing registrations at trade prices.

I suppose it comes down to the sellers situation. If Newreg have your details, I am sure you will hear from them if they ever need to sell some stock in a hurry.

You may want to read this article which has information on how to buy a private number plate at the best possible price. :)

I'm not 100% sure they do own it, but it says they do on their website. And it's not on the DVLA website either, all other plate websites say that the can 'get it' but don't show a price, and don't claim ownership.

It sounds like it may be Newreg's own stock from what you've said. Just remember DVLA can only sell brand new, never-been-issued registrations, so that's the only reason you would ever see a registration for sale direct from DVLA.
