I'm sure you've budgeted for all the usual things like solicitors fees, stamp duty etc.
I would reccommend having your mail redirected for at least a few months as there's always someone you forget to inform!
I second what a few people have said and would suggest you book your moving van for the day after you get your keys at the earliest. There are quite often mix ups on the day meaning you don't get your keys until the afternoon or sometimes even just before the estate agent is closing! And I would book a removal firm. I've tried to move myself a couple of times and you always underestimate how much stuff you actually have. Plus you're never sure how clean the new place is going to be!
Make sure you collect loads of boxes for moving. Request some on freecycle and then offer them once you're done.
I would pack a box of essentials for moving day such as toilet roll, cleaning products, kettle and tea bags etc! As you mind find it hard to find all these things in amongst all the boxes. Oh and mark on the boxes with a big marker pen what boxes are to go in each room.
One thing I definitely would say is that there are always unforeseen expenses so try and have at least a few hundred in a savings account.
Make sure that when you move in, you check that everything is in working order. Put the heating on and try out all the white goods. If anything is not as advertised, inform your solicitor straight away.
Take time to clean your old place as the last thing you'll want to be doing is fighting over a deposit!
Make lots of lists!
There's probably loads more I could say but can't think of anything else right now. Good luck in your new home!x0 -
Live in the home for about 6 months to a year before doing any decorating. Really get a feel for the place and think about how you want it to work for you two. Saves loads of money in the long run if you dont rush in to it.
The one thing that has saved me a fortune, is to have all my bills set up on direct debit, from a seperate account to the general monthly spends account. If you have duel fuel from a company, and pay direct debit each month, this is often the cheapest way to get your gas and electric. I pay my water bills and council tax this way too. That way you know where you are at each month and this will make you feel more confidnat about your disposable income.
I would recommend getting the boiler serviced around September time. Then you beat the rush on the demands on plumbers time. If there are any issues with it then they can be fixed before the really cold weather hits.
I would recommend investing in a big fridge freezer. You can take advantage then of bogof offers or bulk cook, which saves you time and money.
Hope you enjoy having your own home. Its brilliantThe best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
