I am looking for a small family car which i can use to teach my daughter to drive. She will be a named driver on provisional licence. From past experience the premuim increase to add a learner driver is low but soon rockets up after he/she pass their test. So naturally the insurance group of the car is important to make sure i can afford to insure her in future.

Parkers website use insurance grouping 1-50 which is the current version while some other companies advertising in autotrader use the grouping 1-20 which is the old version.

Was also told that this grouping is a guide only. Insurance companies have their own system depending upon claims they received against a particular model. The higher the number of claims the more loading they add on.

Want to know which system/website to use to find out which car is insurable for us. The last thing i want is to buy a car and find i can't insure my 17yr old daughter. Naturally would try to get a claim before buying a certain car.

Want something with a easy access (have bad back etc) and cheap to buy etc. High on the list is the focus 1.4-1.6 petrol 2006 era. Cheap as chips and plenty around. Going for petrol because of low annual mileage and no DMF/DPF (if fitted) problems. Would love a mpv c-max/zafira/touran but they are at least a couple of groups higher with same engine
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

and hopefully add her as named driver if premiums allow.

You do realise that, unless/until she's a named driver, she can't drive the car, even as an accompanied learner?

    Yes i do.

She will be a named driver on provisional licence. I will be teaching her to drive. She won't be taking the car out on her own.

  • It was just the way you phrased it:-

I see what you mean :)

What i meant was add her as named driver to drive the car alone after passing the driving test.

Avoid popular small petrol cars for a start. Sounds daft but the probably attract the biggest increase in premium due to their higher claim rate with younger drivers.

Think of your overall budget car + insurance. Sometimes paying more for a car can mean cheaper to insure.
Buy something fairly new and they think you will drive carefully and look after it.

Wonder how long it will be before they start asking for photo's of the car before covering you. My niece will probably have them adding another zero to her quote. Its got so many scrapes and dents you will see better cars at the banger races.

Seems parking by ear is too hard. Just keep going until it wont go any further.

  • An older, bigger, unpopular diesel will be your best option. A big engined Passat turned out cheaper for my OH to drive when he first passed his test (and much nicer) than the usual Micras, Corsa's etc.

Your best bet is to check the before and after test prices by doing two quotes the only difference being her licence status.

You also need to factor in how long she will be on your insurance before and after she has passed her test and factor that in as well i.e. 2 years as learner plus 5 years as driver equals £x. Obviously the sooner she gets off your insurance onto one of her own the sooner she can start building NCB, just add yourself and another low risk driver as named drivers on her policy.

Parking by ear. Instead of using proper judgement and mirriors etc.

You listen for a crunch you know when to stop then.

Look at some of the cars in the carparks with the corners of the bumpers worn away from parking like that.
