value of scrap metal in washing machine.

posting here because it seems like the nearest fit.

Got a broken washing machine which has been left in the garden. Self installed the new washing machine myself (got it at knock down price).

now I'm split in 2 mins about the broken machine, I can phone the council and they'll take it off me, no headaches, no time waste. I get diddly squat.

but I can take it to a scrap metal dealer and possibly get some money out of it. BUT, I doubt they'll collect, if they do it will be for peanuts.

I can't drive it to a scrap metal dump, it won't fit in my hatchback. I was thinking of dismantline it myself, extract the metal, leave the wood and plastic and take it piece by piece into the boot and too the scrap metal guy. Will I get more money if I've done the dismantling work myself and make it easier for them to smelt it down. What will I get for it in bare metal form?

p.s.. most impoertant question of all, the one I had in mind which led me to create this post is, how much time will dismantling the washing machine take?

About enough to cover the cost of the rubber you burnt off your tyres to drive there.
I us sold a solid copper back boiler tank for 65 quid and copper is worth money unlike the guts of a washing mahine.

In all honesty they are worth peanuts, I wouldnt bother scrapping it and just get the council to pick it up.

I used to repair white goods with my late father in law, we used to have to amass 40+ machines to get anywhere near like anything decent back, in the end we stopped doing it as it wasnt worth the effort.

They must be worth something, there are 3 or 4 rag and bone men who come round my way weekly collecting old washing machines and the like.

aright thanks, I just wasted an entire weekend building a trellis with bamboo and weatherproof duct tape, when I could have bought a ready made one from b&q for £25 delivered. (cost of materials was about £25 + 16 hours of my time).

So I'm really not keen on wasting another weeked to make £20.

Part of the reason it's not worth much is because it's mixed metal, so alot of effort to separate the separate materials, and because a lot of the weight is the concrete counterweight block. Conecrete isn't worth much. Best to get the coucil to take it.

hence my question how much will it be worth if I dismantle it and seperate out the metal bits by myself?

maybe I can "upcycle" like in apprentice fashion and sell the drum as a special plant pot for drought plants like cantus for £100

A washing machine weighed in as is is worth between £5 and £8, depending on the weight, obviously. There is virtually no copper in a WM, save for the wiring loom which wont even get you a kilo (£1 - £1.30 s worth). Some older machines or top end machines have stainless steel drums, but very rare these days. The SS drum can get you a tenner, but as I said, very rare. The motor on its own may get you £2 - £3.

But you have to dismantle it and it will take a while.

Best left out for the rag and bone mean who will take it off your hands willingly and then it hasn't cost you a penny to get rid of.
