How can I have a shower attached to my bath? There is no wall on the side of the taps

Hi, after years of living in council accommodation that has no shower (only a bath), I would like to know how I can go about having a shower added to my bath. There is no wall on the side where the taps are (left hand side next to the toilet), so I'm confused about where the shower head would attach... or perhaps the plumbing could mean that the shower head could be added onto the wall side (right hand side) of the bath. I just have no idea about these things! Can anyone add any insight? Would it be very expensive to have a shower added? I feel like I'm living in the dark ages! Could I ask for help with this from the council? I live with my mother who is 70 years old.

Many thanks

I think you would be lucky to get the counil to pay for it unless your Mum has difficulty with ,obility in which case they may take the bath out and put a shower, but social services normally have to be involved.

If you have a combination boiler, you can install a surface mounted mixer valve on the other end of the bath. Relatively straightforward for a plumber. Difficult to give you a cost as I don't know the set up.

Can you add a shower attachment to the current taps and fit the head on the back wall (long side of the bath?

Otherwise, a plumber could take the feeds from the current hot & cold tap feeds under your bath and run them under the bath and back up to the side with the wall to connect to the shower. But this will mean removing any tiles & some plaster to bury the pipes, then retiling (or add a surface mounted one as phill99 says). So a bit messy but it can be done. Plus an electrical feed will be needed if you're having an electric shower fitted.

I wouldn't expect this to be more than a days work for a plumber though.

Cheapest option to start would be one of the old style things where you push hoses onto the actual taps.
