Thanks - two letters with certificate of posting for each. And there was me thinking I was being really smart and even more careful sending them recorded delivery!

I know I'm sounding really pathetic but I'm waiting for a friend to change the yale lock for me. Scared of making a hash of it (I could and would!) and scared I'm doing something wrong. Hopefully all be done tonight.

I've changed a lock before, it really isn't too difficult and took less than 10 mins. The tools you might need are a Phillips + Flat head screwdriver, and possibly a junior hacksaw. With mine there were 5 screws and a straight swap of the cylinder.

There's some instructional videos on youtube. This is the first one i came across

Don't be scared changing the lock, as it's actually quite easy!

Just put the old lock in a draw, then change it back on the day you move out.

The landlord should never know you've change the lock as he shouldn't be letting himself in!!

Don't forget to change locks on all external doors, unless you can bolt them from the inside instead.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Given that your LL is either deliberately or ignorantly missing the point, I'd be minded to contact your local police in advance. They might be able to have a word with him to warn him about harassment and illegal eviction.

(On the other hand, you might just get some officer who hasn't the first idea about the relevant law and just fobs you off ... it's double edged sword).

If he does turn up and try to force entry, ring 999 and report a breach of the peace as well as an illegal eviction.

Also speak to your local council tenancy officer first thing in the morning in case they have any local suggestions / police contacts.

Hopefully it'll not come to any of the above, but better to have your plan thought out in case it does come to pass.
