When calling a bank, number

and you are on hold/answer phone....(their jingle message)

- does listening to the ANSWER phone get charged on my bill?

(say you hear it for 8 minutes, waiting for somebody to answer)

Yes, the billing starts the moment you are connected.

My BT phone package includes free calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers and my bank always answers with a real person in 3 rings, maybe time to change one or the other ?

Certainly does, unless, as already said, the number called is allowed in any inclusive minutes you may be allowed.
Really winds me up, and even telling the recording where to go does nothing except it allows you to vent a bit.
My home insurance company is the same, with an 0845 number, as I found out last week when hailstones smashed through my roof. Cost me £3.50 to tell them my house is damaged and water is coming in. I was already upset, but they still insisted they had no alternative to the 0845 number. The UK landline number I used to use now gives a "number unobtainable" tone.
I would change provider if I called such numbers a lot I suppose.

Totally depends what number the bank is using-which you didn't tell us?
    Try saynoto0870 instead.
Or use an online account-I haven't phoned my bank in more than 10 years.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Its all depend on the fact that which number is used by the bank. If bank is using 0800 number or free phone number then you need not to pay for it . Otherwise you have to pay for the call
