Hell at work during cancer scare

Hi,
I had a Cancer scare in April, and have just had the greatest news last week that I am in the all clear, thanks to the big man up there watching over me.

However, I still went to work the next day hearing I had all the symptoms of lymphoma cancer, I broke down to my manager for 20 minutes who said it was ok for me to go hospital to undergo emergancy tests. However, 1 week later, I had a disciplinery to attend for "not informing my manager of my absence and not following company procedures". I ended up getting a disciplinery as my managers did not believe me over my team leader. I did follow company procedures, and this was all a lie. I was a completely broken down as it was, and had to get a trade union rep involved, who fought my case and submitted evidence. HR over turned this decision as I went through the appeal. However, this has left me in more emotional stress more than ever, and was wondering if there is any action I can take against my teamleader? HR states I am unable to make a complaint of my grievance as it is now case closed, and my team leader has to attend couple training courses in management. Any advise is welcome. Many thanks

Thank you, so am I. It all has hit me now and am in such an emotional state. The doctors stated even though I am all clear, it will take a long time to get over this ordeal. Its has given me a new insight of cancer. I now want justice at work, but unsure how to go about it...

Youve done nothing wrong and the last thing you needed was the company acting in this manner when you had so much more to deal with. I have had similar myself and know exactly how difficult it can be. Good to hear the results have come back negative.

On your manager, this is the typical PC nonsense and office politics that I deplore. Sending him on a course and giving him training for the basic qualities of being a decent human being. What a joke. If he worked for me he'd be giving you an apology and returning to work as a sweeper upperer or teamaker at best.

Thanks Capeverde, I totally agree with you. I am wondering what to do as I want justice for the living hell they put me through which was all unnecessary. Some friends have advised to claim compensation for the emotional turmoil I have gone through, and still going through, or go to the papers with my story. I am not sure of my legal rights, and do want justice. I am leaving the department where I have been for the past 6 years just because I cannot work for such a black hearted team leader who just disgusts me everytime I see her

Stop being silly, 'going to the papers' gees...you do that and you will put a massive bullseye on your back to get rid of you.

The team leader was wrong, the company corrected the mistake. You have moved to a different department (presumably agreed between you and HR), the TL has been dealt with and for all you know they could have recieved a disciplinary and be on a written warning (and there is no way you should know if this is the case).

Your hatred is obviously against this one person and not the company but overall you would be better suited to move on in your recovery and use all your efforts for positive things rather than negative ones that you obviously have running through you.

The best thing you can do is to be thankful things have turned out right. Get back into your routine and dont get consumed by bitterness and wanting to right a wrong. In the grand scheme of things its done now. Just take solace in the fact that you are a better person than your manager and move on.

Takeaway Addict is very blunt and to the point but I believe makes a lot of sense. It really is good advice.

You need to stand back from the situation, you of all poeple should be thinking 'life's too short' Enjoy it, youve been given a second chance and all your attitudes to life should be positive if possible.
The only person you are harming with your obvious hatred is yourself.
Its amazing what the mind can do to the body with no control from us.

The team leader probably already feels a tit for doing this and being seen to have to have retraining, I really would just leave it there if you are moving departments.

Move on OP, and my very best wishes to you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You have won. Technically HR are wrong, in that you could submit a grievance, but as I see it, they have expressed themselves poorly - it is simply that the issue has been dealt with and there is nothing further that the company could do as a result of a ruling on the grievance in your favour.

In fact, to put in a grievance would put you in a weaker position, because they could not do any more than they are doing at present, so your grievance would have to be knocked back.

At least with the current situation, you can now look at your team leader and think "Yeah, given retraining, caught out lying ... "

Not so long ago I went through a situation where I had a sexual harrassment charge hanging over me for a year.

At the end I was cleared and was told that I couldnt file a grievance against the person who made the accusation because they were allowed to make the accusation.

    What did I do ?

I moved to another job in a different office and forgot about it, something I would suggest you do and really enjoy being free of the big C !.

Takeawayaddict, mckneff and dvardysshadow are all correct here. I know where you're coming from, I have similar feelings towards my ex boss but as they are saying the hatred hurts you, not them. Your company did more than mine ever did, in that they have taken action. Ican also assure you that moving will really help you, I managed to move out of that role I was in and the time spent in the newer role was phenomenal for helping me get over the hate and realising a lotof other things.

Most importantly, I'm very glad you have the all clear. Grab life on positive things, don't waste the energy on the negative :)
