Couple of bathroom cleaning problems

Options
Hello all.

Having a couple of cleaning problems in our bathroom that we have decided to renovate as opposed to refitting (Saving about £3-4k!!!)

Firstly our bath has those small dimples in the bottom that are supposed to stop you slipping over (see picture below) but unfortunately they are a magnet for dirt and are a horrid mucky colour.

A friend did tell me to try domestos thick bleach as it had sulphuric acid in and would get rid of the grime.

I tried this and it turned the circles blue and green :D Luckily when I then went ove;r with normal bleach it returned back to normal. This method worked on that occasion but hasn't since.

Any suggestions on getting this spotless? The bath is steel I think with some kind of coating.

Here's a picture: 2012_07_01_12_06_19.jpg

Secondly we have a grimy shower head. Believe it or not this picture was taken after scouring pad! Would I be better taking off the head from the hose and soaking it or something?

Seeing those photos on the web makes me cringe with embarrassment. Hopefully you can help :o

Presumably that is limescale on the shower head. I'd take it off and leave it to soak for as long as necessary (hours) in some neat white vinegar and then it should come off with another scrub. We have to do ours monthly otherwise the holes become blocked. No idea about the circles on your bath as we don't have those, but again it could be limescale.

Can't help with the bath unfortunately, but if it's metal-coated enamel it should be pretty durable. I'd give it a good go with a paste made from bicarb and give it a good scrub now and then.

As for that shower-head, remove it and give it a good soaking in vinegar overnight. That should dissolve all of the lime-scale.

I'd take off the shower head & put it in a jug of vinegar & water (half & half) overnight, then if you have a child who's old enough to be trusted, get them to go over it with a pin sticking the pin through all the holes to make sure all the limescale is out. If not, this task can be done by an adult ;-) but mum used to get us to do it & I get the teenager to do it now.

The bath... I dunno really! It could be worth posting a question in the 'In my home' section of the forum (just above this section) as they're brilliant at DIY stuff over there. I rather think one of your options is going to be getting it repainted, but I know very little about that! The thing to be careful of is taking the paint off in the process of getting rid of the stains.

Have you tried Bicarbonate of soda & again vinegar? I'd try laying kitchen roll down & puring the vinegar over that (so it soaks into the kitchen roll & doesn't run down the plughole), leaving over night, then sprinkling the bicarb over & using an old cloth to scrub the resulting paste.

Use vinegar for the shower head, soak it overnight.

As for the circles on the bath, I have those and they drive me nuts. Anyhoo, toothpaste and a toothbrush are ideal for cleaning them or salt and lemon juice.

    Wow!

I knew that I would get a good reply from people on here but I didn't expect it so quick!! Thanks.

I have used distilled vinegar in the past but would you beleive that I struggle to get any decent quantities at a reasonable price here in London.

Any tips on where to source it?

I'll give the toothpaste a bash on the circles. I'm glad its not just me that finds it infuriating!!
  • If my memory serves me right, im sure something similar was on how clean is your house, and kim and aggi used biological washing powder in hot water, and left it in the bath for a few hours with an occasional swish with a non abrasive pad.

I have recently gone back to using VIM powder, my Mum always used it in the bathroom and kitchen and to be honest I had forgotten all about it till I spotted it in the Pound Shop.

I find it great for sinks baths toilet, halogen hob, and tiles.

The Kim and Aggie idea works well on my shower. It has raised dimples and they go sort of grey, I dread to think what it is, some sort of hideous foot grime...:eek:anyway, after a shower when the surface is wet I sprinkle on biological washing powder then leave it overnight. In the morning the grime just wipes away, no scrubbing hence no scratching the surface.
    Hope this helps!
