HSBC overdraft "late payment" possible mistake on my credit history

Options
So I've been checking my credit score this week, with all 3 major providers (Noddle, Experian & Equifax), and I'm doing this for the first time (so only noticing this issue from 2010 now.)

All 3 providers have a warning on my HSBC current account, that I had a late payment in March/April 2010. Thing is, I've looked through my statements for that date range, and I was only overdrawn by £300ish for about one week towards the end of March, before I was paid on 1st April. My overdraft limit at that time was £1500, so that should have been ok?

I've been overdrawn by larger amounts (but within limits) and for longer periods many times before and since then, and nothing about that is in my credit history. Also at two points earlier this year (March and May) I have been over the £1500 limit (I was unemployed for 6 months, living at my parents), but only for about one day by around £10. These incidents have not gone down in my credit history.

My dilemma is, do I report this supposed mistake to HSBC to try and get my credit history changed? I don't want to kick the hornets' nest, and somehow by getting my history changed for March 2010, they decide to put the other two incidents from 2012 down onto my history?

Also, maybe they are counting the many times I have been overdrawn, and cumulating the time periods into one large "2 months overdrawn" period and putting that in the history? But on the other hand, I was overdrawn (within limits except for those two brief blips) from around December to May continuously while I was unemployed, so wouldn't this period be in my history? I definitely wouldn't want that to go down into my history, so again I don't want to kick the hornets' nest.

Also as this is from 2 years ago, maybe it's too late to get this sorted? This is the only blip I have in my credit history, so it would be nice to have it fixed.

For some credit provider details:
  • Equifax says "April 2010: 1 payment late"
  • Experian says "27 months ago: 1 payment late"
  • Noddle says "March 2010: AA (early arrears) 1 payment late; agreed repayments are 1 to 2 months behind; the account overdraft balance has been greater than your overdraft limit for one to two months; cheques, direct debits and standing orders may have been bounced"

Yes, initially try HSBC and request that they amend it. If they don't change it, then follow their complaints procedure.

They should only report it as a late payment if you have been outside of your overdraft limit. If you remained under the overdraft limit, then you are inside the terms of their agreement with you, so should have a '0' reported to the CRAs.

Or if payments have been bounced due to lack of funds in that month, for example standing orders or Direct Debits.

  • I've found the same on my credit file this morning - a SO went out of my HSBC basic bank account last month but was returned unpaid the same day. So I deposited the shortfall into my account by 12 noon but the SO was not paid. I called the bank at 3pm to ask if it would be paid and they said they couldn't pay it as it had already been reversed that morning. I sent the payment myself by FPI.

Now this morning I've received an alert from equifax saying that HSBC have reported I am a month in arrears! My account was in debit till 12 noon on the same day, how can they report it as one month?

Do you think I should complain to HSBC? This is the only derogatory status on my perfect credit file.

You are required to have funds in the account the day before a standing order or Direct Debit comes out. It's the same with most banks, and will be in their terms and conditions. So you don't really have a leg to stand on.
