Holes in my laundry from washing machine

I have an inbuilt Smeg WD16BA washer drier (there when I moved in). Since I have been using it since last November, on a number of occasions, it has made holes and rips in my clothes.

I've been on the internet to see about this but no-one seems to have a definitive answer, I'm not certain anyone will here but thought it was worth trying.

I run it on 50 degrees and 1600 spin speed and then dry the clothes for 2 hours.

I know some people have said it's high spin speeds that cause this problem but I've heard people who contradict that and also in the machine I used previously which was I think 1400: no problems.

I've felt around the drum for any sharp edges and found none.

It's really getting annoying now, just realised it's torn up two small silk garments which is £35 wasted. I thought Smegs were supposed to be high-end but this machine is just an absolute expensive pain.

I've also had to start separating the colours apart because they started running and ruining the lights and whites. Again, in my old machine I'd put anything together no problems. Though that one washed only, this one also dries, does the colour run in the wash bit or the tumble drying bit which is at 90degrees I think set automatically be the machine? I can live with having to separate my clothes, it's not too much hassle but having them destroyed instead of cleaned takes the biscuit.

Sorry for the moan but I really am getting frustrated by this supposedly top quality machine.

Can anyone help?

you are probably washing on too high a temperature for most things - what FABRIC are your garments made from? Do you read the care labels? Likewise the spin speed may well be too fast for more delicate fabrics.

Most people usually separate colours anyway.

The colour runs in the wash bit - it leaches out of a garment into the water then some garments/fabrics will absorb the colour, depending what they are.

The only things I wash at hotter than 40 degrees are towels and bedding.

obv as a mere man & not really suppost to know about these things, aren't you suppost to seperate whites & coloured & only wash at 40 degrees if they are non colour fast & i didn't think silk was suppost to be tumbled dried at all, like Valli said clothes have a care label for a reason.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

50C seems high for most clothing. I never wash any clothes at 50C normally - I usually do towels and sheets at 60C, but never clothes. - and drying them for 2 hours seems a long time too. Also if you're washing them at 50C and not separating the colours they are very likely to run or bleed, depending on the materials obviously. 50C is too high for silky materials, and also they're not meant to be tumble dried usually.
  • We get holes in our laundry too, small holes of about 2mm. I raised this issue with family and everyone had the same issue. We got a new washing machine of a different brand six months ago and still get the issue.

I wondered whether it was due to zips.

90% of the time we wash at 30/40c with a 1000/1200rpm spin.

Separate your colours and types of material, wash most at synthetic 40 wash, whites at 50, bedding/towels at 60, but again separate colours.
Use a slower spin speed, and monitor the drying cycle, periodically taking out dry clothes and hanging them up (this saves on ironing too) I never iron clothes, take them straight from the dryer to a hanger. I think the cause of your problems is too much agitation in the wash, too high spin speed and drying for two hours.

This will mean washing takes longer and involves more interaction but what you are doing is what is causing the problems :)

Edited to add, ALWAYS handwash silk.

Zip clothes up and turn inside out.
