Seller trying to increase postage - WTD

I bought 10 items, BIN from a seller in Hungary. They had a table with postage charges for various numbers of items which showed that for 10 the charge would be $6 with an optional $4 for registered airmail.
The paypal screen actually showed the postage as $6.5 and I added $4 for registered.
Today, eight days after purchase, I get an email saying: "You sent us 10.5 $ for the shipping fee. But because of the high prize and weight of your item we can only send it as an ensured mail. Please send 17 USD more for postage and we will ship the items after payment."
Apart from the fact that its taken them 8 days to respond, this seems completely out of order.
The odd thing is, that this seller has feedback of 914 with no -ves and 7 neutrals over 2158 transactions.
This shows they are neither an inexperienced ebayer nor in the habit of breaking the rules by nearly tripling the p&p charges after the event.
The postage shown for each item was $2, so they are actually suggesting that I pay $7 more after discount than the sum of the stated individual prices.
I know I could stand on my rights and refuse to pay any extra, but the items were a very good price and I don't want to see them seriously out of pocket. On the other hand, they are at fault and I really don't think I should have to pay more after discount.
I would be grateful for the opinions of others.

so the postage charge per item was $2 each so would be $20 total postage for all 10 items before discounted/combined postage
the auction stated that discounted/combined postage for all 10 items would be a total of $6 plus $4 for insurance for 10 items
but they want the $10.50 you paid plus another $17 dollars so a total of $27.50!?
you could refuse to pay any more than the $10.50 but they might refuse to send the items and refund you instead
so you could have the choice of not paying the extra and not getting the items or pay the extra they are asking if you want them.
i suppose it all depends how much you want the items and how much they are actually worth and whether it is still cheap after the increased postage costs that they are asking0 -
Thats completly unacceptable, tell them no and if they start to argue, report them to eBay0

It's possible that they have screwed up with the international postage rates.
What I see has maybe happened is that each item on it's own would have been sent seperately they would not have had to pay for insurance, but as the value exceeded this it needs to have a higher rate of insurance used.
It's also possible that you selected 10 heavy items.
It's been suggested that if you still feel you're getting a good deal, even with the postal increase that you complete without any undue delay or that you negotiate something. maybe compromise the amount extra and offer half, or ask if it's cheaper if they send in mulitple packages.
You can always mark them down in their feedback for p&p charges, but if you neg'd them it would not effect them much, but if they neg'd you how much would it effect your feedback?Do You Twitter?
Why not follow me and find out what I'm tweeting about!0 -
Not really on, but if you want the items and the postage price is reasonable it might be worth paying (he has probably cocked up). If not then you can take the "complain to EBay" route but you won't have your items. Perhaps come to some compromise?0

That's what I was thinking. I wouldn't mind paying another $10 so that they get what they stated per item. Not really on, but if you want the items and the postage price is reasonable it might be worth paying (he has probably cocked up). I think that what's happened is that they obviously want to send all the items in one package but the value is then so high that they have to change to a different shipping method.
It rather rankles that they wait 8 days and then just expect me to pay the whole extra without so much as a word of apology for either the delay or the tripling of the shipping charge.0 -
Why should you have to pay for someone's mistake!
As its been 8days anyway, I would consider opening up a dispute with paypal. And explain that the seller requires more money from you than actually advertised in his description.
If he's made the mistake, he should oblige the amount which was quoted. Not because - er - I got it wrong!
Like other's have said, it all depends on how much yoy want/need the items!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0
