PLEASE HELP!!
I recently logged onto my computer and had a message come up saying something about the Windows Registry - it possibly said something about restoring the programs :-/ - (not too sure).
When I get onto my desktop / main screen, the icon for all / most of the programs are the 'Microsoft' symbol - which doesn't allow me to open the programs!
(When my Dad logs onto his main screen, all his programs have an AOL symbol - he can't use his programs either)
I was reading other posts about restoring etc.. but I have documents that are ONLY on my computer & not on any disc ::) ...dumb I know, but I didn't think I'd have any problems - my laptop is just over 1yr old.
Like others, everything was installed on the laptop when I bought it, so I have no discs >:(
FYI: My computer uses Windows XP.
Someone suggested that I may have a virus, but I've done 2 virus checks - one with AOL and one with Norton Anti-Virus - both have come back clear!

I'm not using XP at the moment, but doesn't it have a 'System restore' thaalws you to restore the system to a point before the 'troubles'?0
-
Yep there is a system restore, can't remember off the top of my head but either under accesories or admin tools. There is a calendear that will let you chose a date to roll back to so if you can remember when your troubles first started roll back to a restore point before then.
I have used it a couple of times and found it to be very good.Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
Path is
start
all programs
accesories
system tools
system restore
choose a restore point from those available on calender.
Hope there are restore points there.
Best of luck

Hey Guys,
Thanks for your suggestions about System Restore, but unfortunately it won't open properly, as it opens in 'Word' - when I try it a box comes up saying:
File Conversion - rstrui
..a load of symbols come up, then it asks me to select a 'coding that makes the document readable' - i've tried each selection, but none of them make the document readable.
Any other suggestions out there???
....pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaasssssssseeee!?!?!

Are you sure you followed Sickers directions, it shouldn't have anything to do with Word?
PeterI'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
can you run other programs ok?
if you can run a search look for 'rstrui.exe' if that doesn't find anything search for 'rstrui.*'
rstrui.exe is the system restore application
let us know what happens....Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0
