Person one, are you a lawyer, or have you ever been involved in the recruitment of one? As others have said, the competition to get a training contract or pupillage is intense, and only a very small percentage of those who apply will be offered.
My experience, having worked in the sector, is that candidates with a 2:1 or 1st from a Russell Group university in a fairly narrow range of subjects are overwhelmingly more successful in this competition. Those subjects tend to be the most academic ones such as Law, Sciences, English, etc. if you can quote some statistics to back your claim that graduates in media studies are as successful (or indeed have any success at all) in securing training contracts or pupillages, then I'll happily modify my post. However, in the absence of that, my personal experience of that sector is that this would not be a good degree to study if a career in law was your ultimate goal.0 -

No I'm not, thank God, I can't imagine much worse!
I wasn't suggesting that Media Studies is a great entry route for law, just that its depressingly predictable how quickly it gets disparaged on any thread even remotely related to education.
(I'm not a media studies graduate either, just not a snob about it, its fundamentally not much different from English Literature, really.)0 -

I am in awe of you....you have definitive opinions on everything, especially those subjects which you have no experience of it seems. You even argue with those who actually work in the field or have personal experience of any given subject. No one can be an authority on everything.......;)0 -

Is it being a snob to point out the (true) fact that a degree (or A level) in media studies is not as highly regarded by employers as a degree in say English or Physics? Because, irrespective of the content of the degree, that is plain fact, and there is oodles of evidence to prove it.
I have no idea why you decided to leap on my post, which was giving valid advice to a grandparent about how her granddaughter could best succeed in becoming a lawyer, to accuse me of intellectual snobbery, when it now appears that you in fact agree that a degree of this nature would not be helpful. Perhaps you would have preferred me to mislead a 14 year old, and derail her entire career ambitions, in the interests of political correctness.
BTW - I actually worked as a lawyer in the media business, and still would not have found a media studies degree to be in the slightest bit useful. Having had a quick google about the normal careers open to media studies graduates, for most of them more rigorously academic degrees would still be more useful. So I do not agree with your assertion that as a degree it is fundamentally not much different from English Literature.0 -

What do you think I'm trying to be an authority on? I'm just pulling people up when they are randomly insulting for no good reason.
I'm not a media graduate and it grates on me, I just feel sorry for people who've worked hard at a degree they care about and see it disparaged everywhere and by everybody constantly.0 -
In what way "randomly insulting" and in what way "for no good reason" given that in post 33 you concede that a degree in media studies would not, as I said it would not, be a good entry qualification for a career in law :rotfl: :rotfl:
I would class my post which you've objected to as being very specific and targeted advice and not random in the slightest.0 -

It is disparaged for good reason by people who actually know the relative value of particular degrees. It does not fare well in the employment stats of Alumni. That is a fact, not an opinion, not given to disparage but to ground in reality those who would consider doing such a degree and then live to regret it.
Is that not reasonable or advisable?
It is completely laughable to equate that degree with English Lit.0
