Building sand, sharp sand & kids play sand- difference?

Hi

What's the difference between:
  • Building sand
  • Sharp sand
  • Kids play sand
Is there a good cheap alternative to kids play sand for sandpit?

Thanks in advance

My understanding is that building sand is small grained/soft/smooth sand suited to making mortar for things like brick laying combined with cement.

Sharp sand is more granular/rougher used for bedding in things like paving/block paving. Due to grain size it is less likely to be washed away than building sand.

WIth both of those they are raw sand and therefore tend to be "dirty" and likely to stain kids clothing and be rougher.

Play sand is fine washed sand and therefore clean and less abrasive to kids.

An alternative maybe the sand used to fill the gaps in block paving especially if you get it from a builders merchants as opposed to a a big name DIY shed.

Edit:- Example here from Wickes http://www.wickes.co.uk/block-paving-sand-major-bag/invt/220201/?source=123_74
