Fundraising with a family fun run or sports event

Options
I am involved in running a non-profit organisation to support families with small children, and would like to set up a family fun run or other sports event as a way to raise some funds and encourage families in our group and our local community to get active.

I am new to non-profit organisations and have lots of questions regarding running this kind of event. Can anyone help?
1. Can we as a basic non-profit organisation legally run an event like this independantly?
2. Do we need special insurance (we have public liability insurance)?
3. Can we invite members of the public to participate in this event as well?
4. The profits we make from something like this ... are they taxable?
5. Is there a website that gets to the point with all things "non-profit organisation" because I seem to find myself going around in circles a lot trying to get answers, and with 3 small children under 5 myself I don't have a lot of time?

Please help

    1. Yes. So long as you don't mislead the public as to your charitable status not a problem (you're not a registered charity so you shouldn't say you are). 2. Ask your insurer. What you have may cover events, or may not. 3. Absolutely. 4. No. 5. Google National Council for Voluntary Organisations, and volunteer plus your local area. I'd give links, but I'm on a very flaky internet connection ...

Yes you can do what you want, it is no different to running a marathon and raising money for charity. However, as a non registered or incorporated organisation you may find some people reluctant to donate.

    2. Do we need special insurance (we have public liability insurance)?
Almost certainly if you don't have something already in place.

    3. Can we invite members of the public to participate in this event as well?
    Yes

    4. The profits we make from something like this ... are they taxable?
No, they are not profits as presumably you are investing them in charitable activities.

    5. Is there a website that gets to the point with all things "non-profit organisation" because I seem to find myself going around in circles a lot trying to get answers, and with 3 small children under 5 myself I don't have a lot of time?

The charity commission is worth looking at, if there are any specific questions I would be happy to help.

I have tried to answer above.
