Your husband is obviously telling lies to you for some reason.

I recently got two cheques as wedding presents made out to joint names (myself and new wife, made out to same surname).

We don't have any joint accounts in which I could deposit cheques, but after some Googling it seemed that if I simply deposited the cheques into my sole account my bank would be very unlikely to check name(s) on cheque against the name(s) on account.

The cheques were credited to my sole account without any difficulty, despite being made out to joint names.

If the Loan and PPI were in joint names, the bank should not have made any payment without your signature.

So, first things first. Were they in joint names?

If so, contact the bank in writing and tell them you are concerned about what is happening with a complaint about a PPI policy in your name. If your name is on the PPI policy, they are obliged to reply to you.

It would be wise to enclose a copy of your marriage certificate to prove that your name has changed.

If they have already issued a cheque (and this is by no means certain) then they will have to investigate this as an error or perhaps potential fraud.
