Rental tenancy notice

I'd really appreciate your advice.
I currently live in a rented flat, which was on a 6month ast and has now gone to a periodic tenancy.
Our rentday is the 15th of the month, and it looked like that we wouldn't be ready to move in on the 15th of next month. So on the 13th I wrote to our letting co giving 6 weeks notice.
I recieved a letter from them this morning saying that we would be contracted till the 15th of May unless our LL is willing to accept this earlier date.
I had assumed so that as long as we gave at least 4 weeks notice We'd be able to specify our moving out date.
I have heard from the estate agent branch of the letting co, to ask if they can come round and carry a valuation out so I assume LL is considering selling up.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts

AFAIK, rental notice periods need to end at the end of a rental period, so the letting agent would be correct. However, if the landlord was able to move a new tenant in sooner, or complete on a sale sooner, you would be entitled to a refund of the rent from the date the property was re-occiuped or sold.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. What is annoying,
is that my partner took the letter stating that we wished to move out mid-period to the letting agency by hand. The lady she spoke to signed the receipt to the letter and checked it would be ok with her boss
If they weren't ok we would have given 4 weeks notice and moved in for 2 weeks with relatives nearby. I have moved out mid period in the past, hence why I thought it would be fine and that all was required was at least 4 weeks notice.
I can't see them letting it quickly, when we moved in in had been empty for three months and we had to do our own inventory. As the one the letting co gave us was for another flat!!!:rolleyes:0
