it is very easy to get to Newcastle and Durham from Sunderland, you could check if there is anything going on there that you fancy
Newcastle has the Theatre Royal and the Sage so you may find something that takes your fancy0 -

The Winter Gardens is worth a look:

Then walk along Fawcett Street, over Wearmouth Bridge and along the riverside path to the National Glass Centre:

Neither attraction need take hours, which might suit, and the walk will give you a glimpse of a post-industrial landscape.0
