is this a scam re: paypal?

My son has just been on the phone. He set up a Paypal account about a month ago so he could buy some phone covers from bluebud.co.uk. He's never used his account for anything else.

Today he received an e-mail saying there had been 3 payments taken from Paypal from 2 different companies - all in euros and dollars.

Since he's reported it to Paypal, 2 more payments have been taken out. He tried to remove his bank details but it says they can't if there's a payment pending.

Did he actually click into his account to see if the money was taken? I often get these but no money has ever been taken. If he has used the email to log in he needs to log in at https://www.paypal.com and change his password ASAP.

If the money has been taken he needs to call his bank and get the card stopped today, this will stop further monies being taken from the card. Then there should be a way to dispute the payments.

Never, ever click a link sent to you by 'Paypal', always manually enter the address and log in that way.

Yes, it's all on his Paypal account. He has reported them and it says that there are 5 disputes and they're awaiting the other parties responses.

I don't know what he did once he set up the account. I'll need to ask him if he clicked on a link. Thanks.

Jackie, there a number of the back of his card, get him to call it today and report the card as being used for fraud. This will stop further payments being able to go through as they will not be able to use the card details.

Click through as above and click on the payment, you should be able to click the link 'dispute this payment'.

It could be that he has clicked through to a 'false' account using the link, it will look like he has made the payments but actually the site is fake and they are phishing and this actually enables them to get his log in and personal details, this is why he must change his password ASAP.

Yes, when he got the email saying he has paid company a $xx - did he click on that link? This will take him to a false account.

A fake email will also be address as 'Dear PayPal User' rather than by his name.

Either way, change his password and report his card/account being scammed to the bank tonight.

Sorry Jackie, I just read this. Doh!!

On the dispute, if he clicks into it there should be a link that says 'Escalate this Claim'. Is it there? It's been a while since I have done one. Escalating means you get it cancelled right away and the other party does not have to respond.

Thank you. I've just got off the phone to tell him to do that and he's off to do it now. It's already been reported to Paypal. I asked him if he might have clicked on a link and he says he's not sure and that he might have.

The original purchase was only for 2.95. He usually gets me to get him anything if it's through Paypal! So far there has been $70USD and 20 euros out of his paypal account.

Oh thank you. I'll get that sorted too.

I can't see where it says 'escalate this claim'.
