Structual engineer necessary?

In a previous post I wrote that we are looking to buy the house we are renting, but there is an outside crack worrying me.

There is a patio door and this crack leads from the corner of the patio door up to the corner of the window above. My husband got on a ladder and he says that the brickwood doesn't appear to be cracked, but cannot be sure.

The crack is approximately 3-4mm wide. I have not bought a house in the UK before and while I feel it necessary to get a structual survey done, my husband thinks I am being paranoid! :confused:

I know that houses get cracks etc, but this is a huge amount of money to pay out. Is the home buyer survey likely to recommend a structual survey anyway??

What happens if we don't get a structual engineer in and this crack worsens in a few years? Would a home owner policy cover for this? I am really clueless and would welcome any help! :D
