Hastings Direct renewal

My father has received a renewal quote for £270 from them.

I have checked on price comparison websites and they have come out the cheapest for him and offering the same insurance for £240.

To cancel the renewal I have to phone them, but to buy a policy over the phone they charge £12.50.

Do you think the best thing to do is to phone up and cancel the old policy on the phone and buy the new one online? Should I mention that their own company offered a cheaper price or not?

I'm hoping there won't be any mixup and they don't not start the new policy because a cancellation has also been received for the same date (renewal quote)

But also the website says: "You can call our sales team on 0800 99 1066. Please be aware our advisors cannot offer a cheaper price or discount for purchasing over the telephone." so even if I was to mention the cheaper quote over the phone they might not be able to use it.

When my renewal from Hasting's came through the post I checked the price online and it was cheaper. I phoned them and said I wanted to cancel and told them about the online price and they said they would match it. I didn't renew with them in the end though as I found cheaper quotes on Topcashback. It wasn't the sales team I rang, I don't think, it was the number on the renewal letter.

  • Any insurance company that sent me a quote that exceeded what they quoted me on a price comparison site wouldn't get my business again on principle.

Any insurance broker that doesn't give you the cheapest quote isn't doing his or her job properly - they're probably looking at whichever insurance company pays the highest commission to brokers.
