What flowers for pots?

I am about to put my house on the market and have some pots/planters I would like to fill with flowers but my gardening knowledge is non existant.
I have been for a look at the garden centre but just ended up being confused and leaving empty handed.
So the question is - what flowers would be suitable for planting in these containers to look attractive but hopefully last for a while too? I will need to buy them already in bloom but I just really have no idea, I also do not want to spend a large amount of money so where would be the best place to buy them from - smaller garden centres or chains or perhaps even online?
Pots are around 50cm in diameter at the top with a slight taper.
Thanks

You can't go wrong with pelargoniums - they flower for ages and just keep coming if you dead-head them occasionally."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

buy it from the garden centre if you want them in bloom, mail order plants are often disappointing, i like pelargoniums too, lavender is good for pots too for a few years and attractive even when not in bloom0
