I've just bought a Fujitsu Amilo pro V2020 D. Seemed it arrived without a DVD decoder, and as I bought it from ARIA I expect I won't get one as the price was so keen. Anway to cut a long story sort of knee-length..
I've read all previous posts and tried advice (and googled for hours)..
1. vlc site was not available all evening
2. clipex wouldn't work and have since read it comes with it's own malware. 3. have loaded a free version of Ati DVD decoder 2.0 .. and after various problems am now completely stuck with the folowng message ...
''playback failed due to problem with video subsystem''
ps I'm playing region 2 Incredibles and after the message you can see the first screen.
I've read the ATI website but it seems to suggest I need to install a decoder which is what I thought I was installing in the first place.
Can anyone help ?

I don't know of any free dvd codecs available on the Net. The usual sources are: Cyberlink PowerDVD, Nvidia DVD Decoder, Intervideo WinDVD or Nero also have one.
Personally I bought this CD which appeared to be the cheapest option as I have an ATI video card.
http://www.videocapturecard.com/mu.html
It's $19.95 with free postage but you'll have to wait a little while to receive it in the post.

Media Player Classic plays DVDs amongst being an alternative to Realplayer and quicktime. http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/0

Search for Media Player Classic. It can play DVDs without an external codec.
It's not a Microsoft product.

Right chaps (or chapesses) I've finally got rid of the ATi decoder after downoading an uninstall exe from the net. So, I'm of to research all your suggestions... although I have on board intel graphics so I guess the videocapture one is out.
Thanks for all your speedy replies and fingers crossed. Will report back either way.HLK

Tried media player classic..
the download is an exe file which doesn;t actually install anything. I can start the player up but not play anything. I also read this..
....Window Media Player Classic is an enhanced version of Windows Media Player 6.4. This program can play DVDs with help of external decoders like WinDVD and it can also play Realmedia files, if realplayer one is installed....
Looks like I stil need a decoder. Still hunting. maybe I shoukld call it a night.HLK

I fail to understand why you can't play DVDs With Media Player Classic, I've just started to watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with it.!!!!! Version 6.4.8.2. and it runs as it comes, I've merely installed it.0
