Mouse problem

I have recently stated have a mouse problem. It is connected to my netbook and when I click the back button in explorer and chrome most times it goes back two pages not one. It may also highlight all the text if I click to edit a spelling error. It appears to be doing a double click not a single one. I have tried speeding up and slowing down the double click speed for the mouse in control panel but it does not seem to have made any difference. It is not a show stopper but is irritating. Has any one any suggestions?
