Bank Paid Canceled Standing order (NATWEST)

I cancelled a standing order 8 days before its due date by going into my branch. The teller said yes thats all changed etc and done as per normally would expect from them.
now i find the money has been paid out to recepient.
Ive been into the branch and was told by customer service desk that once its gone its gone and all i can do is either of two things.
he said first option is best..
1. ask the recepient for the money back ..
considering it was the banks fault i find that unacceptable for one thing plus I didnt like the fact he was telling me this in front of a bank full of customers to go and ask my landlord for my rent payment back...
2. On monday when manager is in the manager may "lend" me the money back until pay day ?!?!??!
He said the money has gone and they wont pay me back that amount.
Now Natwest complaints phone line tell me it is an unauthorised transaction with the bank at fault...
Altho I must wait till a week day to resolve it.
Im not sure who to beleive now.
but i really need to have my money back they paid out over a week after i cancelled it .

You are doing the right thing to be going through the complaints procedure. As(suming) it is NatWest's error it is up to them to recover the money. If they cannot do so then that is their problem because you instructed them to cancel and they didn't.
Expect the money back and about a tenner on top for inconvenience.
EDIT: Ah. Just read that it is your rent payment. Why did you cancel your rent payment standing order? This doesn't change your position, you cancelled the instruction, but NatWest will (as part of their investigation) inevitably contact your landlord to request the funds be returned. Your landlord will probably query why you have done this.urs sinserly,

Rent cancelled as started new job some distance from me.. paid monthly and 1st pay is 4 weeks away.. I wouldnt have the funds to travel to work for a whole month so had to cancel it for the one month until my first pay day as no income at all until then.0

Understandable, but expect your landlord to be extremely upset.urs sinserly,

Clearly option 1 isn't going to work then, as you did owe the money to your LL and he won't repay it. If the bank will go for option 2 then you may have inadvertently got the best solution - your LL will have his money and you'll have a loan from the bank until your next pay day.0

The branch have tried to be helpful but I don't think they've really understood the situation and have, as a result, been unhelpful.
If you've requested the bank cancel a standing order and they haven't done it then it is definitely an unauthorised transaction. The bank has failed to carry out your instructions and is responsible for reclaiming the funds.
I believe in such cases the bank refunds people quickly, depending on when you report the problem. If reported on the weekend I suspect they would refund you Monday.
As others have said your landlord is going to be upset no matter what happens. They tend to be unhappy when they don't get paid.0 -
Years ago there was a court case whereby a bank paid in error a stopped cheque.
The bank won when it was found that the money was owed legitimately.
So if you are going to complain take care what you say in case they try to apply it here in defence.0 -
I'm a Natwest customer too and a few months ago I needed to stop a standing order. I did this in the branch the same as you have done.
When it was cancelled, I was given a receipt confirming it's cancellation, I also received the same when cancelling a DD for my old car insurance last month, I'm just wondering if you received the same and therefore can show the bank it was indeed cancelled.
Also, did you cancel the SO whilst the technical glitches were in place, if so, there *may* be a possibility it was affected by that. I know my branch were unable to fulfil some specific requests, I needed a new card and PIN as mine has been 'blocked' in the glitch, Natwest admit they are at fault (finally) but said their systems were only allowing some functions through and others they were not able to fulfil.0
