Cleaning Limescale from a shower screen

Hi all,

I have been searching the entire interwebs for some clue on how to best get limescale off a shower screen. I mean, it was so bad that I couldn't see out of the shower cubicle any more!

I have now sorted it!

And I thought that I would share my little bit of insight with you.

Firstly, you need to make sure that your bathroom is well ventilated, or take regular breaks when doing this:

You need the following:
  • Kilrock K (60p - Robert Dyas)
  • Robert Dyas Spray bottle (£1)
  • Windowlene (~£2)
  • Kitchen Roll
  • Rubber Gloves

Firstly, run the hot tap until it's quite warm, and then 3/4 fill the spray bottle. Top it up with Kilrock K, so that it's about 7 parts water to 1 part Kilrock.

Secondly, don your rubber gloves, and make sure that the window is open. Spray your shower screen with the mixture. Leave it for about 5 minutes, before using the kitchen roll to wipe it off. (Also watch your eyes - At this concentration, a quick rinse will wash it out fine, but best to be safe than sorry).

Thirdly - You should be able to see the screen clearing as the limescale dissolves. If it's heavy, then you might need to repeat step 2 again or get a scourer sponge on it.

Lastly - Wait until it's almost dry, and then apply the windowlene. Leave it for a minute or two, and then wipe with kitchen roll as you would a normal window.

As with all chemicals, make absolutely sure to keep the Kilrock K out of reach of children. Wash out the spray bottle thoroughly - we don't want the kids getting their hands on it. And for goodness sake, if you get any on yourself, wash off thoroughly with clean water for about a minute. I managed to get it in my eye whilst spraying, but only because I had the spray bottle on stream, not spray and i got splashback. It washed out ok and is not painful at all.

Hope this helps all of you a bit.

And the next thing to do is buy one of the neat little squeegy things which hang on the shower wall and after each shower remove water from glass with it , takes 10sec's and never have to repeat the heavy duty clean again

White vinegar works well for removing limescale, its cheap initially butsince you get hungry for fish and chips after its not economical in the long run.

I use vinegar. Brown vinegar works just as well as white I've found. I also invested in the very best shower squeegie I've ever owned, which is made by OXO. Really makes light work of cleaning the shower screen & shower tiles etc.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

When I moved into my place, I used whute vinegar applied with a sponge scourer to get the scale off the screen and the white tiles. I good bit of elbow grease and the scale was gone in no time and the tiles looked and felt great.

Now, whenever I have a shower, I use a microfibre cloth to clean off the excess water.

As this is an MSE site, I'd wager white vinegar is a tad cheaper than using Kilrock and Windowlene. A 5l bottle from my local asian supermarket costs 3 whole quid.

Yep any type of vinegar (even balsamic which I suspect is about the same price per litre as the expensive limescale removers) would work as its the acid in it that eats the limescale

Just be careful what sort of tiles you have got. Anything that isn't ceramic beware.
